Author : The Apostle John. Setting : May have been written from Ephesus near close of first century. In addition to his Gospel, we have three Epistles from the Apostle John's pen. This first is the longest. In his gospel he presents Jesus as the Christ; in the Epistle he shows that Christ the Messiah is Jesus. There is a strong emphasis upon practical living. Fellowship with the Father and Son is to be realized in love of the brethren.
Author: The Apostle John. Setting: Evidently written from Ephesus near close of life. This is a friendly letter about a visit the Apostle had recently made. It is addressed to the "elect lady." but whether a church or person is not known. John commends those children of the lady who are walking in the truth, points out the necessity of love and obedience to Christ, warns against false teachers, and closes with an expression of hope to return for another visit soon.
Author: The Apostle John. Setting: Likely written late in John's life, toward close of the first century. Principal subject of this epistle of one chapter is Christian hospitality. Its message revolves around three individuals: Gaius, vs. 1-6; Diotrophes, evidently a leading man in a church in Asia Minor, vs. 7-10; and Demetrius, a model church member.
